Ashok Gadgil was asked by his former doctoral advisor and friend and mentor, Arthur Rosenfeld, to deliver the highly prestigious Tang Lecture. Rosenfeld is the winner of the 2016 Tang Prize for Sustainable Development, and it requires the winner to deliver the Tang Lecture.
